The people behind the Maricar go-kart service (renamed to Mari Mobility Development) were quite stubborn when Nintendo first went after them. Nintendo felt the company was making money off of their characters and Mario Kart franchise, and were also misleading the public about a connection to Nintendo themselves. Maricar initially resisted pushback from Nintendo, and actually taunted them by continuing to use the costumes/characters. Soon after that, things started going downhill legally for Maricar.
The situation has taken yet another turn, and Maricar is in even more trouble. The Japanese high court has ruled on the matter, and they have found that Maricar owes Nintendo for IP infringement. The ruling has Maricar coughing up $450k to make up for the IP infringement. This likely the last nail in the coffin for the Maricar service.
